Small quarto measuring 8" x 10". Screwbound gray cloth over stiff paper boards with black titles stamped on the front board. Rubbing, slight staining, and edgewear thus very good. A notebook used for a young woman's sophomore botany class at William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri. Each page features a dried, pressed plant and a handwritten explanation of the specimen including family, habitat, and blossom, among other attributes. There are 24 plants in total and it appears none are missing. The professor for the class has included notes in red pencil. The college was founded in 1870 as the "Female Orphan School" in "response to the needs of girls who were orphaned during the Civil War." It was briefly known as Daughter's College before changing its name to William Woods at the turn-of-the-century.
