First Edition, First Printing. Oblong small quaro (8" X 10"), illlustrated grey stiff wraps (trade paperback). 144 pp. Very generously illustrated throughout with 136 vintage photographs from the turn of the century to about 1922. This is a pictorial history of the small (and one might say prototypical) Southwestern community of Masontown, PA, which lies 65 miles south of Pittsburgh, along the Monongahela River, and almost exactly midway between Uniontown and Waynesburg. After a very brief one page introduction by the author, every page is a full page vintage black and white photograph of Masontown, its people, businesses, mines, factories, churches etc. This is a photographic portrait of this community which is so typical of Southwestern Pennsylvania of the period because it has every element of a complete self-contained small town. The phototgraphs show the general store, banks, churches, saloons, a captured moonshine still with a curious crowd, coke ovens, houses, coal mines, the town baseball teams with trophy cups, the tent city which sprung up during a strike by the miners, many many vinitage automobiles, horse drawn delivery wagons and carriages, the "Centennial Band, 1988", the Masontown Brewery and its band, a parade with early bicycles including a penny farthing. The list goes on and on. The pictures speak for themselves. A great resource for historians of any coal mining or Appalachian community for its inclusive perspective on small towns of the time. This copy is tight, clean, fresh bright, square, unmarked, unread and unblemished, with a flat uncreased spine. VERY FINE. SCARCE. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 10148
