Blue Transfer Decoration of Wild Flowers Alternating with Wild Animals in Panels on the Rim and a Central Scene of HMS Hecla & Griper Wintering in Melville Sound, with Dog Sled in Foreground "Arctic Scenery" cartouche on the bottom. Very scarce. Fine example that is in excellent condition other than one small chip on the outer rim of the plate and one small crack extending 3 cm. From the edge. very good See "Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880" by Coysh & Henrywood, Vols I & II. The central scenes depicted are apparently taken from illustrations in Parry's & Franklin's published accounts, the edge decorations from Jardine's Naturalist Library series. Maker is Unknown. Two unrelated volumes from the same publishing house bound together. The first is a summary of polar exploration as of 1855, comprising the voyages of Willoughby, Barentz, Frobisher, Scoresby, M'Clure, Belcher, Beechey, Rae, and, of course, Franklin.
