Robert Marshall was a forester for the U.S. Forest Service and a founder of the Wilderness Society. Marshall describes his travels in central and northern Alaska on behalf of the Forest Service to conduct certain research. The journeys by hiking, foot, boat, and dog sled are told in detail, and he especially tells of his desire to climb Mount Doonerak. His love for the land and its people flows out onto the pages. It was he who coined the term "Gates of the Arctic" when exploring the central Brooks Range. This book is said to have inspired the establishment of the Gates of the Arctic National Park. [From front jacket flap]. There are still a few places on the face of the globe which can legitimately be called wilderness; and it was Robert Marshall's greatest happiness to experience the solitude of these places where no man had ever trod. In the wilderness he found a peace and exhilaration that many of us consciously or subconsciously require; he discovered in the wilderness an essential complement and counterbalance to the high-pressure, socially complicated life of today. This book records Marshall's trips by foot, boat, and dogsled into wilderness areas north of the Arctic Circle, exploring, mountain climbing, and mapping new territories. Marshall's account, based on letters and journals written in the field, is a vivid and personal description of his adventures in remote arctic country. . In the wilderness he found adventure, aesthetic experience, space, a sense of freedom, and an opportunity to search for what is basic in life. . . Marshall died at the age of 38; but in his lifetime he had become a leader among those who demand a stop to the devastation of forests and insist that they be administered in the public interest, with a planned consideration of their multiple uses, including wilderness preservation for recreation purposes. He contributed important studies to technical forestry and conservation policy. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 20240217015
