Beschreibung
Three volumes of the nineteenth century periodical The Argosy Magazine. Volume XXV, XXVII and XXXIII from the years 18678, 1879 and 1881. The Argosy was originally founded by Alexander Strahan in 1865 but was later bought, owned and edited by Ellen Wood. The Argosy published several stories and serials by leading authors of the time as well as amusing quotations, excerpts and cartoons. With hundreds of vignette illustrations and full page plates throughout. Ellen Wood was better known as Mrs Henry Wood. aside from her editorial work she is best remembered for her 1861 novel East Lynne. Many of her books became international best-sellers and her work was very well received in America. She purchased The Argosy in 1867 and her writing tone has often been described as conservative, Christian, with the occasional use of religious rhetoric. Other notable contributors to The Argosy include Hesba Stretton, Julia Kavanagh, Christina Rossetti, Sarah Doudney and Rosa Nouchette Carey. In half calf bindings. Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the joints and spines. Some rubbing to paper covered boards also. Front joint to 1878 volume is slightly strained but firm. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot throughout. Very Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers SET24-F-4
