A scarce piece concerning the estate of American philanthropist Stephen Girard (1750-1831), who at the time of his death was the richest man in the United States. His will, which called for his estate to mostly be given to charitable purposes in Philadelphia, was contested by his relatives in France and was ultimately decided in favor of the city by the Supreme Court in 1844.
