Arizona Photo Album (1910's and 20's)

This photo album contains a total of 99 photographs - 96 are pasted onto black paper and bound into photo album, 3 are laid in. Most photographs measure 4 ½" x 3" with a few larger, and album measures 8 ¼" x 5 ½". Also laid in is a handwritten leaf stating: "Father Laudherr (Laudkerr? ) Sister Law (? ). Taken in Phoenix Arizona - April 14 1912." Album is in good condition with 10 leaves detached from the spine but all photographs have little or no silvering or wear. Images depict family members, mostly adults, taking part in family gatherings, picnicking, gardening, and horsing around. Images show desert homes with large awnings for shade surrounded by saguaro cacti, ocotillo, rocks and open spaces; homes surrounded by gardens and palm trees; and other homes with more deciduous looking surroundings. One image depicts jars and fruit on a box on a front doorstep with a photograph placed in front of the box. The box clearly reads: "Chas. T. Goetz - Phoenix Arizona." The photograph depicted in front of the box is a photograph that is also pasted in this album. Arizona achieved statehood in February of 1912 and Phoenix, if these images indeed depict the city and surrounding area, was a growing metropolis, by 1920 having about 20,000 people.
