A very scarce English translation of the classic of French gastronomic literature. By an important restauranteur who at one point served as the personal chef of King Louis XVIII. This is the very scarce third edition of this work. Scarce in all editions, this work saw its first edition in English, translated from the original French, in 1924. The work of Antoine B. Beauvilliers, a pioneering restauranteur who opened the first prominent grand restaurant in Paris. Of humble parentage, Beauvilliers worked his way up from kitchen boy to become the chef of Monsieur, the Count of Provence and future King Louis XVIII. In 1814 he first published this work in French, with it instantly becoming a classic of French gastronomic literature. With a twelve page publisher's catalogue to the start of the work.Contemporary inscriptions to the front pastedown. In the original paper covered boards. Ink inscription to front board. An important cookbook by "one of the most famous early nineteenth century Paris restaurateurs. .Beauvilliers stands as the first and most easily recognised example of a restaurateur as a democratisation of what had once been an aristocratic privilege." (Spang, The Invention of the Restaurant). André Simon called this book, "at the time of its publication easily the best and most reliable both in French and in English." (Bibliotheca Gastronomica). The author's famous restaurant, originally eponymous, and later the Grandes Taverne des Londres, closed the year after this English edition was published. Only one copy has appeared at auction in the past several decades.
