And even before, the Nordic lands were not completely isolated since commercial links with the countries of the South had existed as far back as the days of the Roman Empire, and it was, in fact, via these commercial routes that the first Christian mis sionaries arrived in Scandinavia. St Willibrord, the apostle of Friesland, came to Denmark in about 725 and was permitted to return home accompanied by thirty young Danes whom he wished to bring up in the Christian faith. However, no trace of this mission has been found. A hundred years later, in 823, Ebbo, Archbishop of Reims and papal legate, was appointed to preach Christianity to the pagans of the Nort.
