Beschreibung
Hardback, NOT ex-library. Rebacked: original boards retained but a later, basic spine. Some attempt has been made to match the colour but it is a little crude. Front board (darker than the photo shows) with gilt image of the Matterhorn surrounded by a gilt line border and with four different snowflakes represented. Both boards discoloured and a little marked. Bevelled edges with corners scuffed. Inner hinges cracked, from the rebacking but binding firm. Large (slightly curious) inscription dated 1880 to the half-title. Contents generally toned. Periodic, light marking to the text. Several page corners creased. 14 full page plates and 91 in-text illustrations (various artists). Two folding maps to the rear, the larger with a small marginal tear, but correctly folded. 325pp. The Ascent of The Mattterhorn (1880), is classed by Neate (W65) as the 3rd edition, abridged, of 'Scrambles Amongst The Alps', rather than a true first edition. The 1880 can be called a "first, thus", i.e. the first issue in this version. This is relevant, in that the text deals with Whymper's exploits in and around the Alps and not just with the Matterhorn attempts. One of the most famous of Alpine books, not least for Whymper's account of the final moments on the descent from the Matterhorn, the text is full of the author's opinions and forthright comments regarding all aspects of climbing. The illustrations add drama to the text and certainly there is a fair degree of artistic and dramatic license in some the depictions. Further information available on request. (Uc5).
