Light browning to a few pages, and some small edge tears, but no significant defects. In Very Good condition. -- Contains 20 pages of hand-colored maps of the townships and towns; lithographs of farms of prominent citizens, of some town buildings, and of 3 individuals. Also: Statistics; A List of Old Settlers of North-East Missouri; a Condensed History of the county; Personal Sketches of Some of the Old Settlers and Prominent Men; and 4 pages of statistics re the subscribers to the atlas. This is the first atlas to include the Hannibal of Mark Twain's boyhood, though the maps of course reflect a later period, around the time of publication of "Tom Sawyer". Twain himself is described in the preliminary "History" section, among the "able or educated men" that were raised in the county, as "the eccentic Samuel L. Clemens, better known as 'Mark Twain'." Some of the names that appear in Twain's 1897 sketch, "Villagers of 1840-43: A Biographical Dictionary", appear here also, though only as mere names in a list or mentioned in passing in an historical account: Capt. Sam Bowen, Thos. K. Collins, Judge Draper, Samuel T. Glover, J.F. Hawkins, R.F. Lakenan, Russell Moss, and Abner Nash. (No one else surnamed Clemens, nor Blankenship.). However, prominently featured in the atlas is one of Twain's old acquaintances: Ben [Benton] Coontz, whose full-page lithographed portrait is accompanied by a biographical sketch half a column in length. There is a full-page plat of Hannibal, and also a map showing the environs of Hannibal, including the islands in the river to the north of town. Among the many litho illustrations are 3 relating to 1875 Hannibal: the A. Shenker & Co. dry goods store (full-page); a view of stores along Broadway; and the City Building. -- According to NUC and OCLC, only 4 other copies of this important atlas are in the collections of American libraries. -- Le Gear L 2129. Size: Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 001512
