VANDERMAELEN, Philippe (1791-1869). Atlas universel de geographie, physique, politique, statistique et mineralogique. Quatrieme partie. - Amer. sept. Bruxelles: P.M.G. Vandermaelen, 1827 Folio (21 x 14 inches). Half-title, title-page (spotted and with one or two pale stains). 2 double-page general maps of North America, 77 regional maps of North America numbered 1-76 and 57bis, with original hand-colour in full and in part (some intermittent spotting). Contemporary half calf, marbled paper boards, with green and red lettering-pieces on the spine (head and foot of the spine scuffed, corners bumped). Provenance: with Arkway, 3/84; from the important cartographical library of Warren Heckrotte, his sale, Rare Cartography, Exploration and Voyages, Part III, March 10th, 2016, lot 203 The fourth volume, with maps of North America, of Vandermaelen's monumental and comprehensive 6 volume atlas of the world, and THE FIRST LITHOGRAPHED ATLAS Vandermaelen, a renowned Belgian cartographer, who is known for his many detailed maps of Brussels, built one example of the monumental globe that the maps in this volume were designed to create. It required the building of a custom-made room, within Vandermaelen's own spacious Geographical Institute, and measured more than 23 feet in diameter. As such it remains the largest image of the earth's surface available to a 19th century audience. As a result of its large size, and uniform scale this atlas is very important for its large scale depiction of newly discovered and developed areas, including the American West, the Far East and Australia.
