Two books about Brighton in the early nineteenth century. Although the publication dates only span a difference of sixteen years much was changing in Brighton in a period of both national and local transformation. By 1825, the population of Brighton had more than doubled from that of the first decade in the 19th century to about 25,000. So, the Attree's guide (1) does not, for example, feature an exotic oriental palace, information about steam packet boats to Dieppe, the building of the Chain Pier etc etc. Both books have been rebound (Historical/Topographical Picture & Environs (2) book locally in Western Road) in dark maroon patterned leather. Both show wear and tear of similar but varying degrees of fading and staining - see photos. Internally, both display consistent tanning and spotting; especially on the preliminary and final pages. Differences to note (1)Topography/Picture of Roads): includes a detached and folding map (Phillips's Coasting Companion and Map of Roads to Fashionable Watering Places). This includes a closed tear which has been poorly repaired by transparent adhesive tape - see image. The (very tanned) half title page has detached from the text block. The pages are uncut. Spotting and staining is particularly apparent although the text is generally quite legible. pp. 96/110 x 180 mm. Differences to note (2) Historical/Topographical Picture & Environs etc): front board is very rubbed in the bottom half. There appear to be two title pages; one of which features a b/w illustration of the entrance to the Chain Pier and is very darkened/stained. Also, there are twelve b/w engraved illustrations (e.g. a further picture of the Chain Pier - during a storm, the Royal Pavilion, Devil's Dyke etc). pp. 144/32mo. More photos available on request.
