Beschreibung
Auguste Rodin; Robert Descharnes & Jean-Francois Chabrun; A Studio Book, The Viking Press, New York, 1967. All the illustrations and the text were printed in Switzerland. The color plates are tipped in. From the blurb Rodin s career as a sculptor spanned a period of fifty years, and although he has been judged the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo, until now no book has done full justice to the scope of his genius. The eminent art critic Jean-Francois Chabrun tells the full story of Rodin s life and of his development as a sculptor, from his birth in Paris on November 12th, 1840, through his early apprenticeship the years during which he lived in a stable and supported himself by modeling cherubs and sketching designs for other sculptors and the triumphant successes and honors of his later years, to his marriage, in 1917, to the faithful Rose Beuret, who had been his mistress for more than half a century. The text covers all phases of the great sculptor s work, assessing his importance as an artist and the influence of his art on the younger sculptors of his day and in the years since. In preparing the illustrations, Robert Descharnes spent several years working in museums and archives on both sides of the Atlantic. His magnificent new color photographs of more than eight samples of the artist s existing sculpture (shown as complete works and also in detail), reveal its great power and beauty and the subtle tones and textures of Rodin s bronze and marble. Many of Rodin s comparatively little-known paintings, drawings, and etchings are also included. In addition to the superb color printing, various engravings and printing processes and special papers have been used to duplicate as faithfully as possible the original effects of drypoint, chalk, pen-and-pencil sketches, and charcoal, as well as the old photographs and other historic documents with which the text is illustrated. Every care has been taken to make the book a beautiful and fitting tribute to Rodin s genius. This large format book, 277 pages measuring 299mm X 255mm is in fine condition in a very-good dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap. This large and extremely heavy book will require additional postage. Price $75. One of THE books on Rodin. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 22125
