The Australian Defence Force: Meeting the Modernization Challenges (Australian Defence and Deterrence)

This book highlights the September 26, 2024 seminar of The Sir Richard Williams Foundation which was entitled: “Enhancing and Accelerating the Integrated Force: An Operational Perspective.” This seminar focused on how the force in being or the ready force was focused on improving its capability, its survivability and lethality for the fight tonight. For such a focus, one needs a sense of urgency for how to improve the force in the short to mid-term, rather than over emphasizing the long-term future and future force structure planning.

In addition to the seminar report, Dr. Robbin Laird conducted several in-depth interviews with ADF members and Australian strategic analysts concerning priorities in enhancing the ADF as a force ready to “fight tonight.” The current government has crafted a number of long-range plans to shape a new ADF a decade out, but this seminar and the book focus on short and mid-term modernization versus long-term restructuring.

How to think about ADF modernization from a shorter-term perspective to deal with pressing challenges in the Indo-Pacific region?
