Beschreibung
First Edition, with a one-page A.L.S. (written on both sides) by Caldwell, dated October 20, 1841, affixed to front flyleaf. Frontispiece, viii, [17]-454 pp; ads. Original cloth. Some foxing to frontispiece and title page, else Very Good. 'A remarkable repository of medical scandal' (Garrison, History of Medicine, 4th ed., p. 443). In 1849, against his will, Caldwell was retired [from the Louisville Medical Instituted] because of his age. He spent much of his remaining time in writing his autobiography, of which William Osler said 'Pickled, as it is, in vinegar, the work is sure to survive' ' (Web site of the Caswell County Historical Association, Yanceyville, North Carolina). '[R]ecounts (though one can never be sure just how accurately) memories of a long, vivid and turbulent life . there is no better way of getting the feel of early nineteenth-century American medicine - that strange blend of rawness and deep learning - than by reading Caldwell's memoirs' (E. Gaskell, review of the 1968 facsimile reprint, Med. Hist., 15(2): 199, April 1971). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 16475
