8 x 5, laid paper, vertical folds, left edge ragged, right edge with small tear and staining, overall wear and toning, ink a bit faint but still legible, with one correction by Carleton in text. Carleton writes: "Mr. Davidson, Dear Sir: I send you herewith, application for passport, duly made out and certified, and a draft for $6.50. Have passport send to Carmel, Putnam Country, New York, care Miss Mary L. H. Carleton. Very truly, Will Carleton."
