HISTORICAL CONTEXT: A political reformer, philosopher, novelist and journalist, Godwin was a leading figure in British radicalism in the late eighteenth century and one of the earliest exponents utilitarianism and philosophical anarchism. Married to pioneering feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft, their daughter Mary went on to marry Percy Bysse Shelley and became Mary Shelley - authoress of Frankenstein.
