Titel: Autograph Signed Letter In Which Ganz Writes...
DESCRIPTION OF ITEM: Dated April 23rd 1880 on ‘Mr Ganz’s Orchestral Concerts’ letter headed paper, Ganz writes to J Hugh Thomson, ‘I cannot sufficiently thank you for your kindness in writing such a splendid notice on my concert in the 'Queen' and for having sent me the proof copy. I have just bought the paper. I am very glad to hear that you were pleased with the performance - it will certainly be my earnest endeavour to make the concerts as artistic and attractive as possible and if the press supports me I have no doubt that I shall be successful. I hope you have received your subscription tickets in Row 13. I enclose the Programme for the next concert. I have been obliged to make a few alterations - Monsieur Saint-Saens could not get his new Concerto ready so he will play his first instead’. HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Adelina Patti’s favourite conductor, Ganz had played under Berlioz as a young violinist. He went on to become joint conductor of the New Philharmonic Concerts in 1874. In 1880, he took over sole responsibility for these concerts and renamed them ‘Mr Ganz’s Orchestral Concerts’ (it appears Thomson’s review was for one of the early performances in this series). Amongst the famous artistes performing under Ganz in this latter capacity were Saint-Saens, Vladimir de Pachmann, Madame Essipofi and Madame Sophie Menter. He was also the first to conduct Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique and Liszt’s Dante Symphony in London in their entirety. He also served as Professor of Singing at Guildhall School of Music until 1912. On June 7th 1908, he gave a Jubilee Concert at the Queen's Hall at which the distinguished artistes appearing included Madame Adelina Patti, Mme. Clara Butt and Mr. Edward Lloyd, Sir Charles Wyndham, Mr. George Grossmith, Madame Blanche Marchesi, Mdlle. Marie Engel, Mdlles. Giulia and Sofia Ravogli, Miss Georgina Ganz, Madame Alice Gomez, Miss Ada Crossley, Mr. Kennerley Rumford, Mr. Charles Ganz and Sir Charles Santley, Mons. Johannes Wolff, Mons. Hollman, Mr. Cyril Maude and Miss Mary Moore, and Miss Winifred Emery. Composing many popular songs of his time too, he was widely decorated by various crowned heads of Europe. He also wrote an autobiography ‘Memories of a Musician: Reminiscences of 70 Years of Musical Life’. After performing with him for many years, close friend Adelina Patti also organised a benefit concert for him in 1911 when illness prevented him from continuing to pursue his profession.
