Boards stained and worn, spine rubbed with gilding mostly lost, extremities chipping. Front hinge reinforced with paper. Text lightly tanned and soiled. Contemporary manuscript inscription of Bethany Juvenile Library. A good, solid unsophisticated copy in a contemporary binding. The 1810 New Haven edition of Corry's immensely popular and frequently reprinted biography, first published in London in 1800. This copy bears an interesting early provenance, with a manuscript note on the front free endpaper recording it as part of the "Juvenile Library" in Bethany, Connecticut, near New Haven. The author was something of an unusual character - born in Ireland, Corry moved to London in the 1790s where he wrote an eclectic mixture of titles, including THE DETECTOR OF QUACKERY, exposing medical frauds, as well as poems, satires, fictional stories for children, and several other biographies. His biography of Washington went through some changes in its various editions; this edition is slightly truncated from the original, but also reprints Washington's Farewell Address in full.
