Deighton traces the idea, the planning, and the realization of blitzkrieg from its roots in the aftermath of Versailles~a demoralized Germany, psychologically ready for Hitler and his radical tactics. He shows us the concept of "lightning war" taking shape from the German experience of trench fighting in World War I; from British military theory (how the books of B. H. Liddell Hart and J. F. C. Fuller unwittingly contributed to Nazi strategic thinking); from the temperaments and talents of the men who served Hitler's purposes, fighting the quick, aggressive war he desired; Heinz Guderian, the leading exponent of blitzkrieg and the commander of the world's first armored corps . Erwin Rommel, later to gain fame as "the Desert Fox," but, earlier, Hitler's personal escort at Nuremberg . Erich von Manstein, inventor of the 1940 invasion plans. And on the other side, the French, attached too closely to their own experiences in World War I, relying on the outdated Maginot Line and a hopelessly outdated chain of command, fully equal (despite later claims to the contrary) in men and material to the Germans but (as Deighton makes clear) lacking any sense of daring or innovation, led by old soldiers like Gamelin, Weygand, and finally, Petain . unable (or afraid) to halt the bold, even reckless German sweep through the Ardennes forest that ultimately led to the near fatal encirclement of the British Expeditionary Force and the remnants of the French Army at Dunkirk. Filled with dozens of photographs, line drawings, maps, tables, and concise day~by~day accounts of the fighting on the land and in the skies, Blitzkrieg is superbly vivid military history, a book that challenges official, established versions of a crucial phase of World War II. …
