The Book of Thousand Nights and One Night or short Arabian Nights (1974) Folio Society limited edition in four volumes, bound in full red leather (morocco). This is the Powys Mathers translation from the French by Dr. J.C. Mardus. Arguably superior to the the 19th c. translation by Richard Burton which was infused with Victorian pre-conceptions. The Folio Society issued this edition in a cloth variant, and this full red morocco binding as an unnumbered limited edition of 500 sets only. Condition: near fine. The books have hardly been looked at, the first volume feels read, the other three unread. Some light signs of handling, but nothing major. The paper is clean. No bookplates, no previous owners names, no stamps. Clean throughout. Top edge gilded and present. Usual shelf wear to the green cloth slipcase including some rubbing from sliding in and out of the shelf and the typical internal ghosting. The set was limited to 500 unnumbered copies and was priced at GBP 38.50 in 1974 which, adjusted for inflation, corresponds to roughly GBP 450 in today s value of the Pound Sterling. Our pricing takes into account the scarcity of the set. This is by far our personal favourite of all Folio Society limited edition productions. Simple and understated, but classy design of the creative early 1970s era, and high-quality material used. One of the absolute classics of world literature; hugely influential on Oriental and Western literature alike; published here as one of the most stunning editions ever seen. Production details: Bound in full Chieftain goatskin; blocked in Gold with a special design; gilt tops and set caps; Cloth-covered slipcase. Printed on acid free paper (over 2,000 pages in total); each volume contains 13 charismatic full illustrations (vol. I and vol. III by Eric Fraser; vol. II and vol. IV by Frank Martin). The illustrations capture the Orient well and eroticism (the stories were written for adults and not for children as often seen in Western abbreviated editions). First and Fine.
