First Edition. First printing. Presentation copy, inscribed on a tipped-in sheet: "My dear Mabel and Gardner: this stout volume, in which on occasion you have expressed an interest, carries both the affection and high esteem of Susan Delano McKelvey," undated but clearly after publication. Large, thick octavo. Green cloth, titled in gilt on spine; xl,[1]-1144pp; nine inserted leaves of maps (some folding) and two more in rear pocket. Tight and square in the original glassine wrapper, with four faint adhesive stains to endpapers resulting from the wrapper having been taped down at some point. A very nice copy of this massive and meticulously researched history. The author was among the leading specialists on desert flora in her period, and a first cousin of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
