"BUSON was a celebrated Japanese Nanga style painter and poet who combined his talents. He was also a well known and famous painter during his lifetime and made his living as a painter. . Born in Settsu, his father probably a rich farmer. At age 22 went to Edo, studied Haiku under Hayano Hajin. After his master's death in 1742, he led a vagabond life until he settled in the small village of Yosa in 1754 where he took his name. . During this period he was influenced by the great Chinese painter Shen Nan-pin & other Chinese painters and the works of Hanabusa Itcho. Later he worked in Kyoto & was recognized with Okyo as one of the two leading Kyoto painters of the time. . As a poet, he ranked next to Basho, produced many Haiga and all his paintings have a literary content. A sympathetic painter, representing the Nanga ideal in being both poet & painter. . Part 1.: LARGE PORTFOLIO: This contains 40 loose plates: 11 color tipped-in, 29 black & white collotypes, title page & list of plates as issued, about 40 x 51 cm. . Part 2.: "BUSON OH DEN NEN PU RAKKAN IN PU" "BOOK OF THE ARTIST'S SEALS & SIGNATURES." Bound in yellow stiff wrappers, stitched binding, contains text of the artist's signature samples and his Hanko [seal or chop] samples, with tissue guards, one black & white calligraphic print. Size is 22 x 30 cm., contains 22 double folded leaves. With chronology of Buson, his paintings, with full notes on each example. . *** The main work consists of a series of the artist's great works: portraits, Chinese style landscapes & rural scenes, horse screens, literati paintings, Nihon Ga [traditional Japanese paintings], folk paintings &c. . *** CONDITION: . The large folio has a Chitsu, has all internal joints reinforced with brown Kraft paper tape, now solid and firm. . The 40 plates are clean without marks, the paper is a bit "toned" as usual with its age. . The stitched text covers are bit rubbed at the extremities and a touch of dustiness, else solid. The contents very clean. Otherwise the contents is very clean. The additional stitched text [22.3 x 30 cm.] with 22 double-folded eaves & tissue guards volume has a title slip, covers a bit rubbed at the extremities and a touch of dustiness, else solid, contents very clean. has been mended in the joints.
