First edition. 8vo. Pink printed wrappers, 11 pp., illustrated, maps. The back cover provides a map of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway, which begins in Chicago and Milwaukee and travels west to Chamberlain, Bowdie, Woonsocket, Sioux City and Eureka in South Dakota, Fargo, North Dakota, Omaha, Nebraska, Kansas City, Missouri, for a total of 6,150 miles of track. The large folding map affixed to the rear is of South Dakota details the extent of the railway and the large portion of land opened for settlement by the treaty of 1889. This booklet describes Sisseton as "the brightest town and the richest county in northeastern South Dakota." Much information is provided about agricultural crops such as wheat, barley, flax, native grasses for hay, potatoes, and small fruits such as strawberries, cherries, grapes, crabapples, and plums "grow easily and yield bountifully." Information on the climate, water supply, medicinal and mineral springs, etc. plus livestock raising especially sheep and cattle. A full-page photograph of a Dakota sod shanty is of interest.
