From Booklist: It should be noted that presidential duties figure little into this entry in the Beginning Biographies series. That?s somewhat understandable given how, at publication time, Obama had yet to win his second term. Instead, this follows the path taken by our forty-fourth president, beginning with his childhood in Hawaii and leading to his education, early career, and jobs in both the Illinois and U.S. Senates. Two-thirds of each page is taken up by a photograph, and the images represent a nice variety that begins with grainy family snapshots of little Barack on a trike and teen Barack playing basketball, and continues all the way up to campaign photos. (Notice how the crowds grow larger as the book progresses.) At times the enthusiastic text seems to place too much value on clarity rather than specificity. Why not name the special college to study law that Obama attended? Why say This is an important job, rather than provide an example? Even though the book does not make Obama?s life goals perfectly clear, the striving toward better things will come through to readers. Grades 1-3. --Kraus, Daniel
