The first edition of Charles Dickens' 'Barnaby Rudge' in book form. Bound in half calf with cloth to the boards. The first separate edition. First published as a weekly periodical between April 1840 and December 1841. This particular edition was originally published with 'Master Humphrey's Clock', 'The Old Curiosity Shop' and 'Barnaby Rudge' in three volumes. However, in this case, 'Barnaby Rudge' has been bound by itself using sheets from Volume II and III of the original publication, with a new title page and the original pagination. 'Barnaby Rudge' was Charles Dickens' first historical novel, set mostly during the Gordon Riots of 1780. It follows the life of Barnaby Rudge, a simple man with a loving mother, in amongst the chaos of the anti-Catholic protests. Illustrated heavily throughout by George Cattermole and Hablot Knight Browne, better known as Phiz.Bound with the preface to Barnaby Rudge, as stated is present in this edition by Eckel (p.63-4) in his work 'The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens and their Values : a Bibliography'.Bound without the frontispieces to volumes. Bound in half calf with cloth to the boards. Externally, sound, with slight rubbing to extremities and joints. Cracking to joints, heavier to the front, with cords visible. Lacking spine label. Front board may detach with further handling. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with light handling marks throughout. Noticeable repair to p420.
