Beschreibung
The book was originally published by Macmillan in two volumes in 1888. A seller of this 1889 edition is calling it a 'new edition.' It runs 291 pages. The two-volume edition ran 247 and 264 pages. You can see the covers in the photos. They are quite clean. There is a gilt design on the front and spine, nothing on the rear, probably faded off there. There is a little bit of rubbing and crinkling at the spine ends, one tiny tear at the top one. There is a little bump/dentl off the top edge of the rear cover. The edges are in good shape. There is little rubbing at all four corners. The middle and bottom page edges have some light bits of foxing. The spine has a moderate forward lean, but the book is decently bound. I found only one instance of a very thin space between two facing pages, the book was probably left lying open there. There aren't any spaces between the covers and any of the pages. The covers are tightly bound. The inside covers and end papers are black. They are clean. There is a little creasing off the top edge of the rear inside cover. There is a nice-looking bookplate of an Annie Lyman on the front inside cover. There is a tiny bookseller stamp (W. B. Clarke & Co., Boston) off the bottom edge of the front end paper. There are no other attachments. There is also a light shadow of the square shaped bookplate on the black front end paper. There are four pages of Macmillan advertisements at the end of the book. They are in very good condition. Annie Lyman penned her name off the top edge of the half-title page. There is no other writing anywhere in the book. There are no markings anywhere. The pages are in nice condition. They look very clean. The half-title page has a dozen or so small tan spots of foxing. The next five pages each have only one or two such small spots. Over the remainder of the pages I saw only a handful in total. There is a mild top corner crease or crinkle on a handful of early pages. Over the remainder pages I saw only a few more. I didn't see any placeholder creases. Two consecutive pages have a tiny tear and a small crease, both for from the print. From a reader review: 'It has a kind of innocence that is no longer treated as a vehicle for good writing. An upper class families' many children are scattered to friends and relatives because the mother has gone to care for the father who is a high-ranking officer in the British army in India. The children, from teenagers to tots, are trying to adapt to their new households. much of their experience could be out of one of the books in my girlhood library at school. However the quality of the writing and the convincing characters hold ones interest, a Mrs Gaskell kind of book treating small events with respect and even dignity.'.
