"Bauer's remarkable book will be viewed, even by the Velikovskians, as a great improvement over previous critical studies." ~ Marcello Truzzi, director, Center for Scientific Anomalies Research. Since the appearance in 1950 of Worlds in Collision, Immanuel Velikovsky's radical theories of planetary physics have been the center of controversy. More than thirty years later, the debate continues. Beyond Velikovsky presents a detailed analysis of the entire Velikovsky affair, conclusively resolves the major misunderstandings and primary arguments between opposing camps, and leads us beyond to a more complete understanding of the scientific process itself. Initially, Worlds in Collision was hailed by the press as a literary and intellectual event of the first order. An immediate bestseller, it sold nearly 75,000 copies its first year and has since been reprinted more than seventy times in English alone. In addition, Velikovsky's other books ~ like Ages in Chaos and Earth in Upheaval ~ continue to be reprinted, two posthumous works have recently appeared, and he himself continues to be the subject of numerous symposia and articles in journals as diverse as Kronos and The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Velikovsky's popularity, however, only served to isolate him from a scientific establishment already incensed by what it viewed as the work of a charlatan. Many scientists derisively attacked Velikovsky's theories about terrestrial catastrophes, biblical chronologies, and Earth's "close encounters" with other planets. But they seriously undercut their case by resorting to innuendo, ridicule, misrepresentation, ad hominem arguments, and even by threatening a textbook boycott of Macmillan, Velikovsky's first publisher. Bauer demonstrates that these attacks failed because they did not seriously address the central issues involved. Equally important, he shows precisely why and to what degree Velikovsky was wrong. In particular, he looks at Velikovsky's little~known monograph Cosmos without Gravitation (1946) to underscore just how poorly Velikovsky understood basic physics and celestial mechanics. Fair~minded and lucid, Bauer's study is a model of how such public disputes about scientific or technical issues can be understood and even resolved. "The interest in Velikovsky is not going away because catastrophism is in the ascendancy and Velikovsky, right or wrong, has become impressed on the public consciousness as the primary exponent of catastrophism. Bauer's criticism falls on all who deserve it, both pro~ and anti~ Velikovskians, and will do much to balance the critical environment surrounding Velikovskv's work." ~ C. Leroy Ellenberger, senior editor, Kronos: A Journal of Interdisciplinary Synthesis. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8281705
