The first edition of what still remains the best general bibliography of English literature from a collector's viewpoint was published in 1834. "It was, however, a financial failure, and Lowndes, a third-generation bookseller, was forced to give up his own business and work as a cataloguer for H. G. Bohn. After his death, Bohn issued a revised and enlarged edition (1858-1864) which met with considerable success." (Breslauer & Folter).
