"The Dibdinian age may be aptly said to terminate with the dispersal of the gigantic library accumulated by Richard Heber (1773-1833), a bibliomaniac if ever there was one," who accumulated a library totaling between 200,000 and 300,000 volumes (De Ricci, English Collectors of Books & Manuscripts, 102). This first sale lists 7,486 lots. There were eventually a total of 16 sales held over a number of years in London, Paris and Ghent.
