71 pp. plus a one-page list of books printed for R. H. Evans; 8vo, modern quarter brown morocco, gilt spine title, marbled paper sides. Attractively bound by the Harcourt Bindery of Boston (their invoice laid in). The rare, priced auction catalogue of the library of Col. Thomas Stanley (1749-1816), an MP for Lancashire from 1780 until his retirement 1812. The 1,136 lots cover a wide range of subjects, including literature (e.g., the four Shakespeare folios), voyages and travels, history, natural history, and classics. One of the many high spots was De Bry's Collectionum Peregrinationum in seven folio volumes and described as unique. Indeed, Dibdin offers high praise for Col. Stanley's library: "If ever a limited collection shewed the taste, judgment and liberality of its owner, it was the collection formed by the late lamented Colonel Stanley" (Bibliographical Decameron, vol. 3, p. 82). Margins ruled in red. A near fine copy; a few small corner areas of offsetting from earlier binding onto title page; contents otherwise generally clean. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 5358
