Preface, Illustrator's note, Introductory Chapters, Explanation of Plates, Index; 501 pages. Volume II: Part 2, 1914. Introductory Note, General Chapters, Addendum to Volume I, Explanation of Plates, Index to Both Volumes; 719 pages. (Note that the pagination includes the Color Plates.) The binding on both volumes is strong and solid; the original green cloth is in very good shape, despite gentle bumping to the spine ends and corners, and a few superficial spots to the covers---more so to Part 2 (the second volume). There is a hint of water splashes, though there is almost no evidence of it in the interiors which have remained fresh and completely clean. [Please see my five images of both books.] Gilt lettering on both spines is bright. Color Plates are from drawings by Louis Agassiz Fuertes; there are also numerous black-and-white photographs accompanying the text. This comprehensive ornithological study provides migration schedules and local lists, followed by detailed descriptions for each individual bird including marks, distribution, migration, haunts and habits---even for the passenger pigeon and the booby. It is a superb work of scholarship, still fascinating today---both historically and for current use. The two volumes, on excellent quality paper, are extremely heavy and probably inappropriate for international shipping. Domestic rates will have to be increased. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage.
