This impressive history of the Trans-Atlantic liner trade begins with a survey of firststeamers on the run, from the early 1800s. By the late 1820s the service was becoming reliable, relativey safe and quite competitive. It is at this point that Charles Lee takes up his historyof the trade, to which he applied the sub-title "The Romance of the Atlantic Ferry". The early sections examine the extent of international rivalry which soon saw ships from Britain, USA and Germany, often with several companies flying their national flag. In the search for international prestige the Blue Riband became the signal of success for the ship setting the fastest runs across. One appendix lists ships that made record crossings and another details of the largest liners on the service which in later years included Italian and French.liners, and ships from other nations. Although the book is not dated it is most likely c1931, when the latest ships mentioned were entering service. All the famous ships of the "Atlantic Ferry" up to the 1930s are covered, and often pictured, in this fine nautical book on the Golden Age of Atlantic liner travel.
