This VG-/VG- format 1, per Mattson & Davis (7-5/8 " gray cloth with black lettering; front cover has picture of boy in red & black looking in a window, spine has logo of magnifying glass and fingerprint also in red & black; plain end pages; frontis + 3, all on coated paper [early printings had color frontis which duplicates the dust jacket illustration, which is what this book has]. White coated paper dust jacket, pictorial, white with a different 5-1/4" x 4" scene, in colors, for each book, duplicating the frontis of each book; white spine with magnifying glass / fingerprint logo). The exterior is square, reasonably clean, with minor bumps to both upper corners and to the head and heel of the spine, with no fabric damage. There is slight rippling at the fore edge of the rear board, (see photo) probably a manufacturing defect because there is no evidence of any water damage. Other than an inked inscription on the front paste down (oddly written vertically near the spine), the book is otherwise free of writing, stray marks, stains of any sort and page damage. The color frontis + 3 is intact, hinges are strong, and the paper is very flexible. The jacket has moderate general wear: a 2" closed tear at the bottom of the front fold, a pinkie-fingernail sized chip out of the rear panel, a 3-1/2" closed tear at the bottom front gutter, and minor chipping at the head and heel of the spine.
