[TWO BOOKS]. Undated but 1980's? BOOK ONE: Much of the coal and ironstone mined in the Eastern Valley of Monmouthshire during the nineteenth century was used in the local ironmaking industry, and working conditions in the vast majority of pits and levels opened up for mineral extraction were primitive in the extreme. lt seems incredible therefore that prior to the 1842 Mines Act boys under ten years of age and even little girls were allowed to work underground, and even more incredible that many hundreds did so, sweating in the dust and darkness alongside their fathers, mothers and elder brothers. As the century wore on most ironworks closed or turned to steel production, but the call for coal continued to rise and pits and levels grew ever deeper and larger. Conditions both underground and on the surface were still however deplorable, and in an economic environment where human safety counted for little it is hardly surprising that many workers - and even the occasional innocent bystander - lost their lives. Within the pages of this book are the names of 703 of them, each one of whom Iost his or her life in the Eastern Valley coalfield between Cwmbran and Blaenavon. The period under review goes from May 23rd, 1829, when the first edition of the Monmouthshire Merlin newspaper was published, to the last day of the century, December 31st, 1899. BOOK TWO: Within the pages of this book are to be found the names of 523 men and boys whose deaths were directly or indirectly attributable to their working in the Eastern Valley coalfield during the first half of the twentieth century. Mining had always been a notoriously hard and dangerous occupation, and prior to the outbreak of the First World War most coal was obtained by the use of mandrils, shovels and blasting powder. Improvements were introduced albeit slowly to make the life of the hard working collier that little bit easier to bear, but even after the arrival of coal cutting machinery and conveyor belts conditions underground were far too often atrocious. Much has been written over the years about coal mining, notably about coal production, individual collieries, and the ongoing struggle between coal owners and the increasingly powerful Trade Union movement. This book is somewhat different, as it deals specifically with those who lost their lives in this most cruel of industries. The period under review goes from the first day of January, 1900, to the first day of January, 1947, the latter date marking the dawn of a new era, when the coal mines were nationalised and brought under government control.
