Charming hardcover in 3/4 fine leather binding with 5 raised bands & gilt titles. Marbled paper covered boards is surface worn, leather upper tips rubbed through, bottom tips only bumped, Inner hinge cracked at lower 2 inches of text from fep through page 15 only. The leaves are still tight and going nowhere. This is the 'New Edition' of 1873, originally published in a two vol set in 1864. Front pastedown has a large, very attractive, illustrated plate that states: Royal Artillery Regimental Library and it depicts a lion and a unicorn standing on their rear legs with front legs around a military crest, with latin imprinted around them that I can't make out except; To Right and Glory Lead. There are no other former library markings found. A rare compilation of several short sporting and miscellaneous tales, each story is paginated separately - so guessing approx 300 pp. Book has had some professional restorative work, the head of the spine has a little dip in the leather from many fingers taking it off the shelf, (no tears, just lovely aging. Can only imagine the various hands that have held this 145+ year old book.
