In Don Ammon’s second novel, A Boy, An Afterthought, unstable teen Blake Keineg must come to terms with his father’s abandonment while navigating the minefields of sophomore year: bullying jocks, mean girls, and a crush on a popular senior who is already taken. After catching the attention of his dream girl, Amy Anderson, Blake must charm her away from her boyfriend, Nick Morgan. Against his better judgment, Blake becomes entangled with the couple, and the three end up spending a weekend in an isolated cabin. There, Blake’s exploration of his sexuality unearths suppressed trauma and forces him to confront his mental instability, putting all three teens in peril.
