This VG book is likely a first edition--it and the jacket list only the first four titles in this series, all published in in 1915; additionally, the book lists all the "Boy Chum" series books through the 1915 title, but lacks the 1916 title. The exterior is clean, square, with mild bumps to the head and heel of the spine; there are no corner bumps or edge dings. Both the top and bottom edges are slightly discolored (the discoloration extends only several mm onto the front and rear panels, but is more noticeable on the spine); and both top and bottom edges have light wear. The interior is nearly pristine--it is free of writing, stray marks, stains of any sort and any sort of paper damage. Hinges are strong and the paper is still quite flexible. The only flaw is that the RFEP has light brown splotches where the jacket touched it. The first format VG- jacket has small chips at the head and heel of the spine, a 2" closed tear at the lower rear gutter, a 1/2" closed tear at the lower front gutter and a 1/2" closed tear at the top of the front panel (see photo).
