Backed by the Russians and Chinese and their allies, two large communist terrorist armies ranged against Rhodesia and were determined to wrest control of what was then one of the richest countries on the continent from its Western aligned white government. Landlocked and, at the behest of Britain, shunned by the international community, vastly outnumbered and outgunned, there seemed to be little prospect of the Rhodesians withstanding the onslaught.
