First Book Club Edition of the first American edition, with 1945 on the title page, published in the same year as a limited edition of 600 copies and preceding the first American trade edition which was published in January, 1946, with 1946 on the title page. The Text Block is clean, cream-colored, tight, straight and square, with no markings of any kind. The Binding is clean, bright red cloth boards, color uniform throughout, with bright black title, author's name, and drawing of broken column to front, and bright black title, etc. to red spine, white endpapers unmarked except for prior owner's book plate (dated December 1945) and an American Legion stamp on front free endpaper, and with all corners square and sharp. The Dust Jacket is bright and of uniform color throughout, showing wear at folds, chips at head and heel of spine, and tear to lower front fold of spine that is discreetly closed from behind with archival materials, See photos. 5 1/4" x 7 3/4". 351 pages.
