A dramatic story of two self-imposed exiles: Father Damien, a Belgian priest, and Brother Joseph Dutton, a Yankee soldier from Stowe, Vermont. They brought love, concern and care for the victims of leprosy who were tossed on the island of Molokai to fend for themselves. Dutton spent 44 years caring for the young boys and the men, giving them a sense of self-reliance, dignity and confidence. This book is written for the young reader who hopefully will be inspired to emulate these two heroes in bringing compassion and concern to the unfortunates of the world.
Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor: A graduate of the Alexian Brothers Hospital School of Nursing, St. Louis, Missouri, Howard E. Crouch worked with victims of leprosy in the British West Indies giving him a common bond with Brother Dutton as well as the idea for the Damien-Dutton Society of which he is founder and president. This Society gives help to victims of leprosy throughout the world regardless of race or creed. Because the author had access to all of Brother Dutton s personal papers and knows how to write for young people, this is a warm, personal story entertaining and easy to read. In addition to editing and publishing the Damien-Dutton CALL, a magazine devoted to news in the field of leprosy, Howard Crouch has written five additional books for adults and has contributed to such publications as The Catholic Boy, The Sign, and Marist Missions.
