An impressive set of four volumes and a further forty-three issues of the important architectural magazine 'The Builder', with the dates of these issues and volumes reaching from February 1862 to December 1878.'The Builder' was founded by Joseph Aloysius Hansom in 1843. Under the editorship of George Godwin the magazine became an important and successful professional architectural magazine. An important periodical, it offers an interesting insight into the developments in architecture during the year, with in-depth articles on various prominent buildings being built or proposed.During these years, the magazine was edited by architect George Godwin, who turned the magazine into the "most important and successful professional paper of its kind".Including articles of many interesting national, global, historical, and contemporary feats of architecture and design, such as; Blackfriars bridge; Overstone Hall; the Bridge of Avignon; the proposed Paris Popular Opera House; the New Academy of Plastic Arts in Vienna; Dean Milman's Tomb; the new pulpit of Durham Cathedral and Knightsbridge Barracks.Four volumes of the periodical are present here:Volume XX, Parts II, III and IV, from February to April 1862. Individual issue wraps significantly age toned, with chipping and closed tears to wrap perimeters, and small ink spots to front wrap of earliest issues. Front wrap of No. 1772 tenderly held to head only. Internally, firmly bound, with individual issues unbound as issued. Pages bright and generally clean. Individual issue leaves largely unopened.
