For nearly two decades, the Kirtland High School girls soccer program chased a dream.

They celebrated victories. They endured heartbreaking defeats. They built a culture where players became family, teammates became lifelong friends, and success was measured by far more than championships.

Then, in 2020, everything changed.

Amid a global pandemic, uncertainty surrounded every practice and every match. Yet the Hornets embraced a simple mindset: Why not us? Led by legendary coach Ed Bradac, a remarkable senior class, and Division III Player of the Year Erika Zschuppe, Kirtland captured the first girls soccer state championship in school history, becoming the first public school to win Ohio's Division III title since the OHSAA expanded to three divisions.

But Built by a Community is about much more than one unforgettable season.

Drawing on more than a decade of firsthand coverage and dozens of exclusive interviews with players, coaches, parents, and supporters, sportswriter Steve Hare chronicles the complete evolution of one of Ohio's premier high school soccer programs. From the program's humble beginnings in 2003 to four consecutive Final Four appearances and the championship that fulfilled years of sacrifice, this is the story of a community united by a common purpose.

Filled with behind-the-scenes stories, emotional victories, heartbreaking setbacks, and the enduring influence of Carol Bradac, Built by a Community is a celebration of leadership, perseverance, family, and the lasting impact of sports.

Whether you're a former Hornet, a soccer fan, or anyone who believes in the power of community, this is a story that reminds us the greatest championships are never won alone.
