Bright dark blue cloth over beveled edge board with distinctive gilt and silver design and lettering on spine and cover. [10], 11-454 pp. Illustrated throughout with full-page and in-text woodcuts "from Sketches among the actual scenes," by Edwin Forbes. Early edition, c 1895 dated by review laid-in, with reference to Forbes (1839-1895) death "last December" with one leaf of quotations and facsimile of letters from General Sherman and Major-Gen. George B. McClellan. Both Williams and Forbes worked as correspondents during the Civil war. Originally published in 1882, this is an early edition of the retelling of "life as a soldier saw it" including ".camp, march, picket, battlefield and bivouac, prison and hospital were sketched in the midst of the scenes themselves." Better than Very Good with a few finger marks; the front hing is starting to wear, lightly worn ends and a small tear in the binding on the back board. Uncommon. ; 8vo ; fair.
