Inhaltsangabe: An introduction to Burma, site of beautiful and historic religious temples and land of constant fighting.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-7-- Burmese history, geography, religion, and culture are introduced in a clear, unbiased manner. The three chapters on history provide enough information to give a fine introduction without being overly burdened with dates. The chapter on government and economy is especially noteworthy in that it does not gloss over human-rights and ecological violations as have other works for children, such as Yin's Burma (Marshall Cavendish, 1990). Wright maintains an admirably balanced point of view, sympathetic yet unflinchingly critical where appropriate. His writing is lucid, logical, well organized, and, above all, well informed. Illustrations include black-and-white photographs of historical significance, but most are lush full-color photos of contemporary Burma. The country's many minorities receive extensive coverage in both text and pictures. A mini-facts section, maps, and index will make this very useful for school reports. However, the map of India opposite the title page, with Burma relegated to the book's gutter, is a ludicrous inclusion.
