By John Burns. Published and Sold by Collins and Perkins, New York, 1809, full original tree calf leather, two plates, one folding, 8.5 x 5.5 , 8vo. In good condition. Handsomely bound in tree calf leather. Light wear to extremities with minor scuffing to edges and corners. Joints abraded with creasing. Spine slightly creased with minor rubbing to ends. Ex-library of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland. James C. Hall M.D. ownership Alms House dated 1827 on flyleaf, second end paper, and front title page. Internally good with light toning at edges and minor instances of foxing. Folding plate in good working order. Light age staining scattered throughout. Binding remains tight and intact. A sound, presentable copy. Please see photos. An early American work on abortion for American doctors, which at the time was not criminalized. Burns (1774-1850) was the first professor of surgery in Glasgow s School of Medicine. He was highly successful as a teacher and his classes drew large numbers of medical students. He wrote widely and at least two of his books on surgery and midwifery attained great popularity. Interesting provenance of James C.
