Octavo, navy blue cloth covered boards with gilt titles and gilt spine titles. 471 pp, including index. Black and white frontispiece portrait of John Wanamaker and 1 photographic plate of a note in Wanamaker's hand where he characteristically signs himself, "Founder and Maker". John Vansant Wanamaker (1838-1922), was one of the pioneering merchants in the age of modern marketing. Born the son of modest working class parents, he opened his first store in Philadelphia in 1861 and went on to eventually open stores, not only in the U.S. (including New York), but also branches in London and Paris. He is regarded as arguably the first department store merchandiser to understand the power of advertising in creating and attracting consumers. He was the first merchant in the world to employ a full-time copywriter for his advertisements, and he is attributed as the author of the statement "Half of all the money that I spend on advertising is wasted; I just don't which half !" A fierce opponent of labor unions, he was nonetheless one of the first employers to provide his workers with full health care, educational benefits and pension and profit sharing. He served a term as Postmaster General of the United States which his only notable failure, as it was marked by general criticism and controversy on all sides. He was also a noted philanthropist during his lifetime. Wanamakers Philadelphia store was a landmark in Philadelphia for nearly a century and the headquarters had a large bronze eagle dominating the entrance hall which made the phrase "Meet me at the eagle" a byword in Philadelphia for decades. This volume is in excellent collectible condition, with very fresh cloth and sparkling gilt. The text is tight and solid and the interior is fresh, unmarked and unblemished by soil, foxing, tears, creases etc. A very fine copy of a rather scarce title. SCARCE.
