American Civil War. The first nine volumes commissioned by the MILITARY HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF MASSACHUSETTS was published in Boston and New York by Houghton, Mifflin and Company, and in Cambridge by the Riverside Press, from 1895-1912. The Society's founder, John C. Ropes, called for a "Society for the investigation of Military History, principally of our late war, but also of other wars, both of this and other nations." Volumes (numbered 1 through 9) are titled as follows: Campaigns in Virginia 1861-1862, The Virginia Campaign of 1862 Under General Pope, Campaigns in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania 1862-1863, The Wilderness Campaign May-June 1864, Petersburg Chancellorsville Gettysburg, The Shenandoah Campaigns of 1862 and 1864 and the Appomattox Campaign 1865, Campaigns in Kentucky and Tennessee including the Battle of Chickamauga 1862-1864, The Mississippi Valley; Tennessee Georgia Alabama 1861-1864, and Operations on the Atlantic Coast 1861-1865; Virginia 1862,1864; Vicksburg. Each volume is illustrated with foldout maps. They are bound in navy cloth with gilt spine titles and gilt insignias to front boards. Bookplate to front pastedown of many volumes. Spine and boards show some overall minor scuffing/rubbing and edgewear; there is a 2 inch closed tear from crown of volume 1. Some hinges are cracked, else volumes are generally clean and fresh within. Although not complete, a substantial portion of this esteemed set is being offered here. About very good.
