Catalysis, declare the editors, occurs always and everywhere, is not a separate scientific discipline of limited scope, but rather a cross-linking science that embraces all chemistry and biology indeed even listeners to Mozart experience catalysis, they claim, though they do not include him in the encyclopedia. Some 165 contributors explain approximately 3,000 terms relating to catalysis in all the fields where it appears as a reference for scholars, teachers, chemists, biological scientists, physicists, and others within and beyond the academic realm. A sampling of topics turns up burst kinetics, covalent catalysis, horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase, and non-aqueous ionic liquids. Each term is translated into French and German. The cross-referencing is extensive, and most entries include bibliographic reference. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Catalysis from A to Z A Concise Encyclopedia Edited by Boy Cornils, Wolfgang A. Herrmann, Robert Schlögl, Chi-Huey Wong Catalysis occurs always and everywhere: There is no life without thousands of catalytic reactions going on in plants, animals, and human beings. Most of the products of every day life are produced using catalytic processes in the chemical industry. There is hardly any scientist in chemistry, the life sciences, and related areas who does not encounter catalytic phenomena in the daily work. And there is also hardly any scientist to be found who is familiar with all the different aspects and termini of catalysis. This encyclopedia is designed as a first-stop-source for chemists, biochemists, physicists, and engineers whose permanent or occasional interest lies in catalysis. Comprehensive, succinct, and easy to use ? these are the key features of this encyclopedia of catalysis. More than 160 top scientists have contributed approx. 3000 entries ? from A for acylase to Z for zeolith. You will find important information and up-to-date citations on all aspects of heterogeneous, homogeneous, and bio-catalysis, as well as on analytical methods and techniques, and industrial processes.
